The Brief
The four span tunnel structure at Fillpots was originally designed and installed with the intention of converting it to enclosed retail space at a future point. Newspan got this process underway with a first phase of modification in which the first two 10m spans were refitted as an insulated building.

The Solution
Fillpots had seen previous projects we’d completed in the same style as they wanted for their building, so they knew we have a strong track record. By adding elements including our insulated cladding, double glazing and automatic doors to the existing frame and using a built up roof system, the transformation was achieved with no need for extra work to the foundations or additional structural steel work.
Performance efficiency was an important objective too. The building is fully insulated so it now holds heat well and features glazed gable ends to make the most of natural light. As well as maintaining a comfortable temperature all year round so it’s welcoming for customers and an ideal environment for plant stocks to thrive, Fillpots’ ongoing long-term benefits will include economical heating and lighting.
Richard Brann, Fillpots’ owner, said: “Essentially, the use of the building hasn’t really changed – it was previously an external retail area for plants and it still holds plant stocks – but there have been big benefits for our customers. There has certainly been continued customer goodwill since the improvements – as well as the new building looking really smart, they now enjoy shopping all year round in what’s now a much warmer and drier environment, rather than getting cold and wet in bad weather. We fully expect to be working with Newspan again.”
“Newspan have a very good reputation in our industry and our consultants, Malcolm Scott, recommended them highly too. The team were really easy to deal with throughout; they made sure the project met all our objectives and we always felt we were in safe hands."
