The Brief

Newspan were first on site in 2019 to complete phase 1 of the development at Tong Garden Centre and were thrilled to be back for Phase 2. Their second spell on site was for a new two storey building which would connect to Newspan’s work on Phase 1. The ground floor of the new building was planned to be used for gardening products and house plants, the first floor was due to house a new restaurant and some new staff facilities and offices.

In accordance with Government guidelines, Newspan managed to complete the project in difficult circumstances

The Solution

The start date of the project looked at risk with the announcement of the country being put into lockdown. However, in accordance with government guidance the site at Tong managed to stay open and the project could go ahead. Newspan were happy to proceed in cooperation with Tong to make sure everyone could be kept safe on site. Newspan called on their trusted supply chain to procure materials on time and the fabrication team pulled out all the stops to get the steelwork on site during some tricky circumstances. Everyone involved in the project was keen to provide Tong and the local community with something to look forward to once the restrictions on the country were lifted.

The building features an attractive front façade with double glazed curtain walling flooding ground and first floor with light. An anthracite brise soleil provides shading to customers sat in the new restaurant. Additional light enters the building through the glazed atrium, centred in the insulated membrane roof. Newspan also provided three sets of steel staircases on the project, including the feature twin flight ‘T shape’ staircase which has been fitted with stainless steel and glass balustrades.

Special Projects

Newspan’s structures can be adapted to suit many public access applications.
